Breast reconstruction after mastectomy is a highly individualised procedure designed to restore breast shape, contour and symmetry following the removal of breast tissue for cancer treatment or risk reduction. Dr. Leandro Junqueira works closely with your oncology team so that reconstruction is planned around your cancer treatment, never in competition with it.
There is no single reconstruction that suits every patient. The right approach depends on your body, the extent of the mastectomy, any planned radiation or chemotherapy, and your own priorities. Immediate Reconstruction
Reconstruction begins at the same time as the mastectomy, in coordination with your breast surgeon, when clinically appropriate.
Delayed Reconstruction
Reconstruction is planned for a later date, once oncologic treatment such as radiation has been completed.

In many cases, yes. Immediate reconstruction is planned together with your breast surgeon when your anatomy and treatment plan allow it. If radiation is expected after surgery, Dr. Leandro Junqueira may recommend delaying reconstruction so the final result is not affected by radiation changes to the tissue.
Some reconstructions are completed in a single stage, while others, particularly those involving tissue expansion, are completed over two or more stages. The number of procedures depends on the technique chosen and how your tissue responds during healing.
Achieving balance with the opposite breast is an important part of planning. Depending on your anatomy, a lift, reduction or augmentation of the natural breast may be recommended alongside reconstruction to improve overall symmetry.
Reconstruction is planned in coordination with your oncology team so that ongoing surveillance is not compromised. You should continue any recommended imaging and follow up as advised by your oncologist.
Reconstructed breasts continue to settle and soften for several months after surgery. If treatment is staged, the final shape only becomes fully apparent once every stage, including any nipple or scar refinement, has been completed.
